The focus will be on music which is designed to transport the listener, to conjure trances or summon states of ecstasy, taking the audience closer to their god - or perhaps to someone else’s … The series will feature traditional global devotional music, such as Moroccan Gnawas and the Baul singers from India, but it will also open up links to lesser-known forms - Voudoun, or Shamanic music - and highlight some of the ever-multiplying contemporary hybrids which celebrate the power of trance and the magic of repetition. 1mile2 - Call for Artists
Saturday, August 22, 2009 Iftar in the Park - 5th Sept 09 ![]() Message from Toyris Miah: Brothers and Sisters, you are all invited to join me and many others in sharing Iftar this Ramadhan. The event that my friends and I have organised is an Iftar, (the evening meal that breaks each day's fast during Ramadhan), which will take place in the park. Everyone is welcome regardless of your age, race or religion. We will be hosting a fundraiser to raise money for those who will be affected by the harshness of the up-coming winter in developing countries all over the world. We hope that everyone will attend our picnic with a twist. It allows an open environment for people to learn from each other, network and most of all; to understand each other. To this day, people’s religions, traditions and ways of life are still not understood. Unfortunately these misconceptions lead to prejudice that may create animosity; we want to encourage community cohesion. We are hoping that we are able to hold an auction at the event for various different items, which have kindly been donated to us. If anyone is interested in sponsoring the event by offering financial support or by donating anything, from some napkins to some food to share with guests, then we welcome your support. We are also hoping to have some nasheed performers and speakers at the event. If anyone would like to participate then please get in touch. InshaAllah (God willing) we will be able to pray Maghrib Salat and Teraweeh in the park. An item which we are hoping someone will donate is plastic sheeting, or some form of material for brothers and sisters to pray on. Event Details Time: 6.00 pm till late Date: 5th September

Tower Hamlets residents will be dazzled by a spectacular selection of performances, as A Season of Bangla Drama returns to The Brady Arts Centre this July.
Organised by Tower Hamlets Council’s Arts and Events Team, five local drama groups will be joined by three other organisations to perform over four consecutive weekends starting from Saturday 4 July.
The event is in its seventh year, and gives local people the chance to enjoy and find out more about Bangladeshi theatre. It also gives local drama groups the opportunity to perform on stage.
Councillor Rofique U Ahmed, Lead Member for Culture, Tower Hamlets Council said: “A Season of Bangla Drama gives local people the chance to find out what Bangla Drama is all about.
“Whether you’re already a fan of Bengali entertainment or you’re looking for an alternative to a Saturday night in front of the TV, this is a great way to spend your evening.”
The shows cover a wide range of themes including war, love, comedy, along with age-old Bengali stories and modern-day tales.
Many of the drama groups are using rehearsal space in the council’s Kobi Nazrul Centre, Hanbury Street in the run up to their performance.
The council provides the venue and the technicians on the night, and the local drama groups receive the ticket money to pay for things such as props and costumes.
Performances take place at The Brady Arts Centre, 192-196 Hanbury Street, London E1 5HU and start at 7pm with doors opening at 6.30pm. The average performance runs for one and a half hours.
All performances are ticketed events. Tickets can be booked from the box office at The Brady Arts Centre on 020 7364 7900. Tickets cost £5.00 (£3.00 concessions) unless otherwise stated.
