A magical season of Bengali theatre 2009 A magical season of Bengali theatre
Tower Hamlets residents will be dazzled by a spectacular selection of performances, as A Season of Bangla Drama returns to The Brady Arts Centre this July.
Organised by Tower Hamlets Council’s Arts and Events Team, five local drama groups will be joined by three other organisations to perform over four consecutive weekends starting from Saturday 4 July.
The event is in its seventh year, and gives local people the chance to enjoy and find out more about Bangladeshi theatre. It also gives local drama groups the opportunity to perform on stage.
Councillor Rofique U Ahmed, Lead Member for Culture, Tower Hamlets Council said: “A Season of Bangla Drama gives local people the chance to find out what Bangla Drama is all about.
“Whether you’re already a fan of Bengali entertainment or you’re looking for an alternative to a Saturday night in front of the TV, this is a great way to spend your evening.”
The shows cover a wide range of themes including war, love, comedy, along with age-old Bengali stories and modern-day tales.
Many of the drama groups are using rehearsal space in the council’s Kobi Nazrul Centre, Hanbury Street in the run up to their performance.
The council provides the venue and the technicians on the night, and the local drama groups receive the ticket money to pay for things such as props and costumes.
Performances take place at The Brady Arts Centre, 192-196 Hanbury Street, London E1 5HU and start at 7pm with doors opening at 6.30pm. The average performance runs for one and a half hours.
All performances are ticketed events. Tickets can be booked from the box office at The Brady Arts Centre on 020 7364 7900. Tickets cost £5.00 (£3.00 concessions) unless otherwise stated.

Makka Twin Peaks Charity Challenge The challenge After performing your Umrah, your challenge is to trek up mount Noor and Thawr (Mecca, Saudi Arabia) on the same day, in the heat of an Arabian summer’s day. It takes about two hours to complete the trek of Mount Noor and anything upto 4 hours for Mount Thawr. The mountain paths are known for their steepness, this together with the difficult heat will be a test of your endurance. Normally only half of the participants manage to complete climbing both mountains. This year our hope is that all participants complete the challenge, insha-Allah. Please take note of the exercise tips within the terms and conditions and prepare for a difficult test!. After the exhausting challenge enjoy the rewards on offer by praying in the two holy masjids of Mecca and Madina and visit the historical sights of Islam through our sightseeing tours of the two holy cities, insha’Allah. By taking part in the Makka Twin Peaks Challenge you are contributing towards an important Islamic cause, share in the rewards of passing on good knowledge and help to improve our society, insha-Allah. Hadrat Abu Huraira (RA) reported Allah's Messenger (SAWS) as saying, "Among the actions and good deeds for which a believer will continue to receive reward after his death are knowledge which he taught and spread, a good son whom he left behind, or a copy of the Qur'an which he left as a legacy..." (Ibn Majah and Baihaqi) Each challenger is requested to raise a minimum of £1,800, £800 of which will go towards cost of travel and accommodation, the remaining funds will go towards ECC’s appeal.
